Energy Clearing: Tuning into Yourself in a Chaotic World

Right now, there’s a lot happening—politically, socially, energetically. Some people feel inspired to move toward purpose, yet others feel overwhelmed or drained. While we can’t control everything around us, we can be responsible for our own energy—the state we hold, the way we show up, and what we contribute to the world. Energy clearing isn’t about cleansing something “dirty.” It’s about staying in tune with yourself so outside influences don’t pull you off track.

WHAT DOES ENERGY CLEARING REALLY MEAN?

When people hear the term energy clearing, there's a tendency to think in terms of something dirty being made clean or purified. But just like "sleep hygiene" is about cultivating proactive habits to support healthy rest—not "clean" sleep—energy clearing isn’t about purification. It’s about being conscious of your energetic state and maintaining balance.

Instead of thinking of it as washing off negativity, consider it like tuning an instrument. A piano that's out of tune isn't "dirty", and neither is your energy field.

Think of famous singers: Beyoncé and Billie Eilish both have unique, powerful styles. If Beyoncé tried to sing like Billie, or Billie tried to sing like Beyoncé, it would feel off—not bad, just unnatural for them (and us listeners).

This is exactly what happens with energy. You start out wearing your own frequency—your energetic "jeans and a t-shirt." But then you spend time with Julie, and she wears bright colors, so you think maybe I should too. Or John wears slip-ons, Denise has bold glasses, maybe I should too...suddenly you’ve picked up pieces of everyone else—until you look in the mirror and realize you don’t look or feel like yourself anymore.

Energetically, this happens when we unconsciously start matching other people’s moods, emotions, or thought patterns. Maybe you’re normally upbeat, but after a day around constant complaints, you find yourself joining in. Or you normally drive the speed limit, but on a freeway full of aggressive drivers, you start speeding too. It’s not that you’re absorbing bad energy—it’s that you’re resonating with your surroundings—frequencies that aren’t truly yours.

Energy clearing is about recognizing when this happens and bringing yourself back into alignment—not because your energy was “dirty,” but because it drifted away from your natural state.

HOW TO TUNE BACK INTO YOURSELF

Here are some simple ways to realign your energy:

Grounding: Reconnect to Your Own Frequency

  • Barefoot on the Earth: Nature naturally resets us.

  • Breathwork: A few intentional breaths can bring you back into your own rhythm.

  • Salt Showers or Baths: Not to “cleanse” but to recalibrate and soothe your nervous system.

Recognizing Energy Leaks: Protecting Your Own Vibration

  • Awareness: Notice when you start resonating with emotions or behaviors that aren’t yours.

  • Visualization: Envision yourself surrounded by a stabilizing light—not to block others, but to hold your own frequency steady. As you do this, remind yourself of who you are and what your purpose is, anchoring back into your authentic energy.

  • Selective Engagement: Reduce exposure to draining conversations or media that don’t serve you.

Letting Go of What’s Not Yours

  • Many people use white light healing because the intention behind it is clarifying. But it’s not about white being superior—any color can work if your purpose is to release what isn’t yours and return to yourself.

  • Find what works for you: Green light for grounding? Purple for wisdom? Red for energy? It’s about your personal resonance, not a one-size-fits-all rule.

GIF of a woman holding a smoldering bundle of sage, watching the smoke rise. A visual representation of smudging, highlighting both the physical antimicrobial properties of sage and the power of ritual and intention in energy clearing.

Just like white light healing, smudging with sage is all about intention. While sage itself has antimicrobial properties and can physically reduce airborne bacteria, fungi, and even some viruses, what truly shifts the energy is the ritual and the focus you bring to it.

YOUR ENERGY IS YOURS—NOT BETTER, NOT WORSE

A final note: Energy clearing isn’t about having a “higher” vibration than others. Your energy isn’t better or worse—it’s just yours. The goal isn’t to separate from lower frequencies or “purify” yourself, but to be fully present in your own unique frequency.

This whole idea of negative vs positive energy really boils down to the idea that negative energy "subtracts" from who you are, and positive energy "adds" to who you are. It's not about bad or good energy, but rather diminishing or promotional energy. "Good vibes" is subjective. Linda's energy might uplift Susan, but feel draining to Jacob. That doesn’t mean Linda’s energy is good or bad—just that different frequencies resonate with different people. Everything is just energy, until we decide that it has charge (aka meaning).

When you’re in tune with yourself, you’re more grounded, clear, and able to navigate the world with purpose. And in times like these, that’s one of the most powerful things you can do—not just for yourself, but for the collective energy we all share.
